Tech support scams are common. Scammers pretend to be well-known software or technology companies to get access to your computer or your money. Here's how to protect yourself, whoever you're dealing with, including us.
Warning signs
- A pop-up or full-screen warning says your computer is infected and tells you to call a number right away.
- Someone calls you out of the blue saying they detected a problem on your computer.
- You're asked to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps.
- Someone pressures you to act immediately or keep the call secret.
- You're asked to log into your bank account while someone is connected to your computer.
Our promises
- We never call you first, and we never show pop-up warnings.
- We always tell you we are ByteCare Tech, an independent business, not PC Matic, Microsoft or any other company.
- We only connect to your computer when you start the session, and you can end it at any time.
- We never ask for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
- We never ask to see your bank or other account logins.
If you think you've been scammed
- Disconnect your computer from the internet and end any remote session.
- Call your bank or card company to dispute charges.
- Change your important passwords from a different, trusted device.
- Report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
